World Book Day and a Love of Reading
At Thatcham Park, World Book Day is a joyful and engaging celebration of reading, inspiring pupils to develop a lifelong love of books and storytelling. Through a range of activities, including shared reading, creative writing and celebrating favourite authors and characters, pupils are encouraged to see reading as both an essential skill and a source of enjoyment.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum because we recognise its importance in enabling pupils to access all areas of learning and to grow in confidence as communicators. Throughout the school, pupils are supported to develop fluency, comprehension and a rich vocabulary, alongside a genuine enthusiasm for reading for pleasure.
World Book Day provides an opportunity to strengthen this further, bringing the school community together to share and celebrate books. Pupils engage in discussion, recommend texts to one another and take pride in their role as readers, building confidence and a sense of belonging within a reading community.
As a result, pupils develop a love of reading that extends beyond the classroom. They grow in confidence, imagination and curiosity, recognising that reading allows them to explore new ideas, understand different perspectives and connect more deeply with the world around them.
